Gordon Square Review, a publication of Literary Cleveland, holds two open reading periods each year:
- February 1 to March 31. Publication drops May 15.
- August 1 to September 30. Publication drops November 15.
Gordon Square Review pays writers $25 after publication.
Gordon Square Review considers works that have been previously published but are no longer available online or in-print. If work has been published on a personal blog or website, we request that it be taken down prior to publishing it.
Gordon Square Review welcomes works of translation; simultaneous submissions; and writing from writers from diverse backgrounds, voices, and experiences.
Gordon Square Review encourages writers to submit poetry, fiction, or brief nonfiction. For genre specific guidelines, please see below.
- Poetry Submission. Only include one poem in your submission.
- Fiction Submission. Only include one story in your submission. The word limit is 5,000 words (if fewer than 5,000 words, that is okay).

Literary Cleveland Job Posting
Literary Cleveland is a nonprofit community of writers committed to bringing people into the world of words by providing educational writing opportunities at all levels, promoting new and existing literature of the highest quality, and advancing Northeast Ohio as a vital center of diverse voices and visions.
Literary Cleveland is accepting applications for a Development Director to join our growing arts nonprofit and a team of passionate, creative, and supportive individuals. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of development experience, preferably in the arts and nonprofit fields. They should be familiar with donor development, grant writing, fundraising campaigns, and database management. Applicants must reside in the Northeast Ohio area.

Job Description
The Development Director is responsible for overseeing the organization’s fundraising and development efforts. This includes directing fundraising strategy, leading donor development and communication, managing a grant writer and coordinating grant writing activities, overseeing fundraising campaigns and an annual fundraiser event, managing donor and grant-related records, working with board members, and building relationships with donors, funders, board, staff, and volunteers. They will report to and work closely with the Executive Director.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Development Strategy - 20%
- Create an actionable development plan that balances individual, foundation, corporate, and government support to achieve strategic plan goals in collaboration with the ED.
- Prepare and monitor development revenue and expense budgets, regularly reporting on development goals and progress to the ED and board of directors.
- Serve as an advisor and liaison to board committees as designated by the ED and prepare timely reports for ED and board of directors as needed.
- As a member of the senior leadership team, actively participate in organizational strategic planning and management.
- Support Literary Cleveland programs as needed.
Donor Cultivation and Fundraising - 50%
- Lead donor development strategy including solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship.
- Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors (portfolio of roughly 20-30 individuals).
- Assist in building the organization’s legacy giving society.
- Map and activate the philanthropic and strategic relationships of Board Members to expand the organization’s network.
- Draft and send regular update emails to major donors and prospects.
- Oversee annual fund drive including donor list segmentation, mailing and emails, tracking, and acknowledgments.
- Lead the successful execution of fundraising and donor events, including annual fundraising gala with support from the fundraiser task force and auction coordinator.
Grant Writing and Funder Development - 20%
- Maintain grants calendar and pipeline of prospects, proposal deadlines, and report deadlines.
- Manage the contract grant writer by setting clear expectations, assigning tasks and actionable goals, and maintaining the highest levels of professionalism.
- Write, revise, and complete grant inquiry letters, proposals, applications, and reports as needed.
- Research new sources of public and private funding.
Documentation - 10%
- Oversee development systems and documentation (fundraising calendar, LGL database, grants pipeline, donor and prospect records etc.) to ensure clear process ownership, communication and collaboration.
- Ensure the timely gift processing, issuance of thank you letters to donors and funders.
- Support the creation and mailing of the annual report.
- Execute a program of membership reminders and acknowledgements.
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years of experience and a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising and development.
- Superb writing, communication, and interpersonal skills (literary connections or background are a bonus)
- A commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive practices within fundraising activities, and a track record of engaging with a broad range of communities and stakeholders.
- Strong scheduling, self-direction, prioritization, and time-management skills.
- Creative, self-starter attitude.
- Detail oriented.
- An ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience with database management (current CSM is Little Green Light).
- Adept with Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom web conferencing.
- Must reside in the Northeast Ohio area.
Salary and benefits
- Salary range of $60,000-$70,000 depending on experience
